Washington D.C.
Washington D.C. is an independent district in America which is not a part of any state. The capital of the United States has a population of 658’000. The white house is one of the attractions where tourists come to take photos and films in front of it. The yard of the White House is completely visible inside.
Before now , people were able to stand just behind the fences but since some tried to climb over the fence to go into the White House , the police put some barriers a few steps in front of the fence and now tourists must stay behind them.
The Department of Treasury is next to the White House and if you go to the behind the president’s house , you can stay behind the fences and look inside the backyard of the White House and get another view of the building without encountering any extra barriers.
There is a green area behind the White House and I think the national government of the United States should plant beautiful flowers in this space and change it into a prettier place.
Now , there is only grass there.
After going past this green area , we get to Constitution Street where there are several museums , foreign ministry and the Washington Monument.
There are several cherry trees around the Washington Monument.
I have heard that Japan presented these trees to the United States.
I was also surprised when I saw a lot of swans walking near the Washington Monument.
The Abraham Lincoln Memorial is visible from the Washington Monument and you can go there on foot.
There is a big rectangular pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.
A statue of Abraham Lincoln is placed inside the memorial .
It was interesting when I went to the other side of the Potomac River , I could get to Arlington County in Virginia.
Arlington National Cemetery is a big cemetery on the other side of Potomac River where the graves of veterans and their wives can be found.
The graves of president John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis , his wife are also in this cemetery.
A flame is permanently lit beside their graves and there is a small American flag next to the Kennedy gravestone while visiting Arlington Cemetery , visitors can see the changing of the guard at the memorial of the Unknown Soldier.
Everybody who wants to visit the congress of the United States .
The Congressional building (the Capitol building) has a big white dome and there are several statues and paintings inside the building.
The halls of the House of Representative and the Senate are in this building and visitors can see them.
One of the statues which was interesting for me was that of Rosa Park.
Rosa Park was the first black woman who did not give up her seat to a white man when she was sitting on a segregated bus.
The Congress of the United States also has a famous library.
There are some paintings on the plaster works of ceiling and the wall.
The private book case of Gerald Ford (the late president of the United States) is placed inside the library of the U.S Congress.
All museums of Washington D.C. are free for visitors.
The Smithsonian is a natural history museum.
There are several taxidermied birds and animals in this museum.
Airliner aircrafts and warplanes are shown in the Arlington Museum and the Art Museum is close to it.
Georgetown and George Washington universities are two tourist attractive places in Washington D.C.
Washington is a safe city which is not crowded at nights because many of the employees who work for ministries live in the state of Virginia and Maryland nearby.
They come to Washington every morning and return to their hometown every afternoon.
Old Alexandria Town is about 40 minutes from Washington D.C.
Tourists go to this small town to see the main street and the boats pier and have meals in its cozy restaurants.
The restaurants of this town are crowded on weekends.
